What is a silent disco? How it works and how to plan one

Everyone wears a wireless headset, picks a channel and the whole crowd still dances together. Here is how a silent disco works and what you need to get one going.

So, what is a silent disco?

A silent disco is a party where the music doesn't come out of speakers. Each guest wears a wireless headset and hears the music directly in their ears. From the outside you see a crowd dancing and singing along in near silence. On the inside, everyone hears every beat clearly, at the volume they like.

The fun part is that several channels play at the same time. Guests switch channels on their own headset, so one dance floor can have people on EDM, others on V-pop and others on throwback hits. The light on each headset changes colour with the channel, so you can see at a glance who is on which team — and that friendly rivalry is a big part of the silent disco vibe.

How does it actually work?

There are three parts: a music source, a transmitter and the headsets. The source can be a DJ mixer, a laptop, a phone or a microphone (through a mixer), plugged into the transmitter. The transmitter then sends the audio wirelessly to every headset in range.

With SSounds headsets, each transmitter carries one channel. Three transmitters give you three channels running side by side, and a single transmitter can serve an unlimited number of headsets.

  • Channel 1 glows red, channel 2 blue, channel 3 green.
  • Range of up to 300 m from the transmitter.
  • Up to 10 hours of continuous play per charge, recharged via USB-C.
  • Each guest sets their own volume on the headset.

When does a silent disco make sense?

A silent disco works for any event that wants loud, high-energy music without disturbing the neighbours. In Vietnam, noise in residential areas is governed by the national standard QCVN 26:2010/BTNMT; a headphone party lets you keep the energy up while staying considerate of those limits.

  • Parties in residential areas, apartment buildings, homestays or villas.
  • Rooftops, hotel terraces and bars with volume restrictions.
  • Late-night parties that run past the time speakers must go off.
  • Weddings: an after-party for younger friends without bothering older relatives.
  • Outdoor yoga, meditation and wellness sessions where instructions and music need to be heard clearly in a park or on a beach.
  • Brand activations and outdoor screenings (silent cinema).

A few projects we've been part of

SSounds headsets have been used at the Silent Disco Yoga session at 5AM Concert × SpaceSpeakers, at Hermès' silent cinema screening "On the Wings of Hermès", and at a Dove brand event. Very different formats, same need: clear sound in every guest's ears and a quiet space around them.

What you need to prepare

A silent disco isn't complicated, but getting these few things right makes the night run smoothly.

  1. Count your headsets

Plan roughly one headset per guest, plus a few spares for late arrivals or swaps. We can prepare extra spare headsets on request.

  2. Plan the music for each channel

Decide how many channels you want and what each plays: a live DJ or a prepared playlist. We don't supply DJs or MCs ourselves, but we can introduce partners if you need one.

  3. Pick a spot for the transmitters

Place the transmitters near the music source (DJ booth, laptop), somewhere dry and out of the main foot traffic. Test from the far corners of the venue before doors open.

  4. Plan handout and return

Set up a handout desk at the entrance and collect headsets as guests leave. Headsets arrive fully charged; for multi-day events, plan a USB-C charging spot between sessions. If you'd rather not handle it yourself, you can book an on-site technician.

What does it cost?

Single headsets are 200,000 VND per day. Packs start at 10 headsets, and the unit price drops with volume, down to 150,000 VND per headset per day for 500. Transmitters are free on request, up to 3 per order. Prices exclude 8% VAT and delivery; the final price is in your official quote.

  • 10 headsets: 2,000,000 VND/day · 50: 9,000,000 VND/day · 100: 17,000,000 VND/day.
  • Deposit of 200,000 VND per headset, fully refunded within 24 hours after return and check.
  • Optional on-site technician: 200,000 VND per hour.
  • Pick up and return in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, or have it delivered (Da Nang included).
